'If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing."

I don’t have an example of anything that Chagall felt didn’t work for him (how would we know - I am assuming he put into the world the ones he liked???) but we have plenty that did and that Chagall worked from the heart seems very obvious.

His work is free flowing and full of movement and colour. There is so often a playfulness yet still he is able to depict serious moments without loosing any honesty or intensity.

He didn’t sit firmly within any of the particular movements that were prolific during his life, instead choosing to maintain relationship with those within them, without conforming entirely.

I resonate so closely with this quote - if I think too long about a piece then I loose confidence, I ask too many questions, I am too uncertain about the outcome and I make bad decisions. Instead, to jump in and begin, even if it is changed, discarded, altered along the way seems to work much better.

For so many, art and creativity is a way of thinking, processing and finding out what it is that we feel.
